about

The ‘Blackbird’ tune and most of the lyrics for this come from the wonderful singing of Winterton fisherman and singer Sam Larner. Even today when recordings of traditional singers are so much more available than they once were, in my mind old Sam’s authentic, unmannered singing remains an important model of clarity and tunefulness for singers of traditional songs. And he so obviously loved his songs!

My final verse is borrowed rather cheekily from The Green Bed, another song with a similar theme. It may even be related. I’d say it finishes off the story, and gives a room of singers another opportunity to sing the chorus.

By the way, old Sam didn’t make use of table-banging and, despite those hairy Irish popstars, in his memory I also prefer to bang no tables!
