about

After easier-to-reach parts of the sea were cleared of whales, whalemen had to work in the seas around the poles to find their quarry. Frankly, it's difficult to imagine a much harder life than that of those whalermen in the age of sail. Interestingly, AL Lloyd noted that the first version he knew of was a broadside published in the 18th century. I learned the words from the classic Penguin Book of English Folk Songs.
