about

This song goes a long way back for me, for I remember learning it as a 1970s schoolboy, from Patrick O’Shaughnessy’s book 21 Lincolnshire Folksongs and from the Leader LP of songs collected in North Lincolnshire by Edwardian-era composer and folklore enthusiast Percy Grainger.

I think of it as a song from the enclosures, a period when landowners in pursuit of increasing profits enclosed manors, and drove families from the strip-farmed smallholdings that were their livelihoods and their homes. It was no doubt essential for families with unemployed breadwinners and children to feed, and from this song we seem to learn that poaching could be well organised if not well armed.

Looking around at the efforts some landowners still make in pursuit of closing footpaths, I’d say efforts to drive common man off the land continue today.
