about

As a teenager I learned La Pique from the AL Lloyd LP Leviathan, and was immediately struck by its account of on-board bullying. I have sung it on and off ever since. It seems to me that the treatment on sailing ships must have varied enormously - for once away from shore there would be little to prevent the mates and captains from doing whatever they liked. Among the sea song repertoire there are some horrific descriptions of could happen - and I'd say La Pique is one of the mildest.
