about

Different scholars seem to say this jaunty-but-tragic and much adapted American song is really a pop song inspired by at least two real-life murders, one around the turn of the last century and the other during the 1830s. Some say it was composed in 1899, and others that it was popular at the time of the American Civil War.

Whatever its real origins, I first heard it sung live by a very British elderly chap called Eddie who was a regular at Peter Collins’ Neptunes Hall sessions at Broadstairs in the late 1970s and early ‘80s. I’m sure you’re long gone now, but thanks Eddie!
