about

This member of the Curragh of Kildare family of songs comes from Southern Harvest. It’s a composite version made up from three verses collected from Joseph Vincent of Wareham in Dorset in 1906, and a final verse from Marina Russell of Upwey, which is just 20 miles or so
to the west.

The notes suggest it was originally composed in the mid-18th century and continued to be published by the main broadside ballad printers in the 19th century.

Not much seems to be known about Joseph Vincent, but the book has extensive notes about the life of Mrs Russell. These are by Mally and Nick Dow, and Nigel Canter.

Like many women in her time, she lost two children, but in addition her husband developed kidney disease and died not long after the last of her 11 children were born. She also brought up a daughter born out of wedlock.

Mrs Russell was clearly a force to be reckoned with.

She also loved her songs, for she was an important informant for the Hammonds, to whom she gave as many as 100 songs.

We should add that Mrs Russell’s maiden name was Sartin and, as you have probably guessed, she was a great aunt to the much missed and hugely talented singer and multiinstrumentalist Paul Sartin.

There’s a small connection to report: Paul was a lay clerk in the choir at Magdalen College, Oxford during the time that Julie’s son Jack was a chorister there. So she heard Paul’s beautiful singing many times in those years without knowing anything about his other musical life.
