about

This song comes from the classic The Northumbrian Minstrelsy, a collection of small pipe tunes and folk songs edited by John Stokoe and the Rev John Collingwood Bruce.

It was published by the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1882.

In the song, we’re told the waters of the Tyne are rough, which makes us think the lass telling the story is close to the river’s mouth, perhaps on a day with a strong, cold northeasterly. She first tells us she doesn’t dare to
cross and then decides she would, if only she could find a boatman. The indecision seems so human!

There’s no doubt about one thing: the little waltz tune that goes with the song is very beautiful.
