about

Another folk song classic, this time collected and recorded in Sussex in 1907 by Vaughan Williams.

It’s a member of the Ten Thousand Miles family, and two and half centuries ago it was on sale as a broadside ballad.

RVW’s source was Mr Penfold, then landlord of the Plough Inn at Rusper, near Horsham. It’s a privilege that we are now able to listen to the original recording on the British Library website.

Despite the defects of a hundred-odd year old wax cylinder recording, you can hear that Mr Penfold was a pleasant if elderly singer and that he was careful to make his diction clear, as the most effective singers of such songs still are.

The Plough is still a pub, if you fancy a pint within its historic walls.
