about

These days, The Galway Shawl is well known both as a song and as a tune for waltzing, so it came as a surprise to find that it was first
collected as recently as 1936 by Sam Henry. His informant was Bridget Kealey of Dungiven.

It’s a song that gets about. Not so long after it was collected, in the 1950s it turned up in London in the hands of Margaret Barry; during the 1970s in Shropshire singer Fred Jordan also sang it.

The Galway shawl is a distinctive, heavy and expensive shawl that was popular in the 19th century and continued to be worn for about a hundred years before it finally died out. It was made in Paisley, Scotland, and was worn like a coat.

The sweet shawl-wearing young woman with ‘no paint or powder’ described by the song may be a little old fashioned, but the shawl itself suggests she belongs to a family of good financial standing.
