about

This poetic but romantic gem of a song with a wonderful tune has deservedly captivated some of the folk scene’s best known names.

For most of us, the source has been Paddy Tunney’s The Man of Songs LP, originally released in 1962. Gav has a memory of being entranced on hearing Paddy sing it on BBC Radio during the early 1970s.

Paddy inherited the song from his mother Brigid Tunney, her brother Michael Gallagher and a great aunt also named Brigid, and believed the romantic lyrics to be about the Irish Famine, a terrible, evil period in the
history of the British Isles.

As he said, it was a time when landlordism was rife, and when matchmakers may have been responsible for more weddings than Cupid’s bow. Young men could be tempted to abandon their true loves in favour of a girl who owned land.
